Cobb Co., GA - Douglas Co…

Cobb County, GA (January 14, 2026) — A Douglas County sheriff’s deputy was injured on Sunday, January 11, after a driver failed to move over and crashed into two law enforcement vehicles on an Interstate 20 ramp in Cobb County.

According to local police, the collision occurred around 4:45 a.m. on the ramp from I-20 West to Riverside Parkway. A GSP trooper and Douglas County deputies were parked on the ramp with emergency lights activated while assisting with an earlier investigation involving a pursuit that ended with a PIT maneuver.

Authorities say a 2015 Kia Forte approached the scene and failed to slow down or move over. The vehicle sideswiped a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office SUV before rear-ending the trooper’s patrol car. Both the deputy and the trooper were inside their vehicles at the time of the impact.

The deputy was transported to WellStar Douglas Hospital for treatment of reported injuries. The trooper reported discomfort but declined medical treatment at the scene.

The driver of the Kia has not been publicly identified, and authorities have not yet announced whether charges will be filed.

The incident remains under investigation.

We wish a full recovery to the injured deputy.

What Steps Should I Take After an Accident Involving Police Vehicles in Cobb County?

After a crash involving police or other emergency vehicles, the immediate priority is medical care and scene safety, followed by a careful review of what happened and what options may be available.

These crashes often involve unique factors, such as stopped vehicles with emergency lights, active investigations, and specific traffic laws like “move over” requirements. Knowing how the incident occurred and how injuries are documented can be important for both injured parties and those later contacted by insurance companies.

Crashes involving law enforcement vehicles are typically investigated by state or independent agencies to determine contributing factors, including vehicle positioning, visibility, speed, and driver behavior.

Official reports, dash camera footage, and witness statements may all play a role in reconstructing the event. Injured officers or civilians are usually transported for medical evaluation, even if symptoms initially seem mild, as impact-related injuries can worsen over time.

In these situations, insurance and liability questions can be more complex than in standard crashes. Multiple agencies, government vehicles, and private drivers may be involved, each with different insurance coverage and reporting requirements.

Keeping copies of medical records, crash reports, photographs, and any correspondence received after the incident can help clarify what information is needed and when.

Legal guidance may help explain how claims involving emergency vehicles are typically handled, what timelines apply, and how fault is evaluated under state law. This can be especially helpful when injuries occur or when charges or citations are still under review. Having clear information about next steps can help injured individuals focus on recovery while ensuring important details are properly addressed.

In addition, families of injured officers or civilians may need to coordinate time away from work, vehicle repairs, and follow-up medical appointments. Knowing employer policies, workers’ compensation benefits, or available insurance coverage can help reduce uncertainty during recovery. Staying informed and organized in the days following a crash can make the process more manageable and support informed decision-making.
