Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Tractor-Trailer Crash on I-285

Cobb Co., GA (October 13, 2025) – A motorcyclist sustained life-threatening injuries in a crash involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 285 in Cobb County. The incident occurred on Friday, October 10, at approximately 10:03 p.m., about half a mile south of South Atlanta Road.

According to the Cobb County Police Department, the crash involved a 2019 Peterbilt tractor-trailer and a 2023 Suzuki GSXR-1000 motorcycle. Both vehicles were traveling northbound in the left lane when, for reasons yet to be determined, the motorcycle collided with the left rear of the tractor-trailer. The impact caused the motorcyclist to be thrown from the bike and become trapped beneath the trailer.

The collision ignited a fire under the trailer, consuming its cargo. Emergency responders arrived promptly, extricated the motorcyclist, and transported them to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. The motorcyclist's identity has not been released, and their current condition remains undisclosed.

The Cobb County Police Department’s Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is leading the investigation. The cause of the collision is still under investigation, and further details will be provided as they become available.

Motorcycle Accidents Involving Tractor-Trailers: A Growing Concern

Motorcycle accidents involving large commercial vehicles, such as tractor-trailers, pose significant risks to riders. The recent incident on I-285 in Cobb County highlights the dangers motorcyclists face when sharing the road with much larger vehicles. The disparity in size and weight between motorcycles and tractor-trailers can lead to catastrophic outcomes in the event of a collision.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are 28 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to die in a crash per mile traveled. When involved in accidents with large trucks, the risk of severe injury or fatality increases due to the significant size and weight difference.

In Georgia, motorcycle riders are required to wear helmets, which have been shown to reduce the risk of head injuries in crashes. However, even with protective gear, the vulnerability of motorcyclists remains high in accidents involving larger vehicles. Riders must exercise extreme caution around trucks, maintain safe distances, and avoid blind spots to reduce the risk of collisions.

Victims of motorcycle accidents involving tractor-trailers often face long recovery periods, extensive medical treatments, and significant financial burdens. In such cases, consulting with an experienced personal injury attorney can help ensure that victims receive the compensation they deserve. Legal professionals can assist in navigating the complexities of insurance claims, determining liability, and securing financial support for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
