Cobb County, GA (February 14, 2026) – A collision involving a Cobb County police cruiser and another vehicle left two people injured and caused major traffic delays on Interstate 575 on Friday, February 13. Emergency responders were dispatched to the highway near Chastain Road following reports of a serious wreck that left both vehicles disabled.
At the scene, crews found the police cruiser with all of its airbags deployed and a second vehicle flipped onto its side. Both vehicles had come to rest against the center guardrail after the impact. According to the preliminary investigation,
Officer Zelaya-Cruz was traveling in the right lane when they attempted to merge into the left lane. Authorities allege that 60-year-old Robert Morales, who was driving in the left lane, failed to yield, resulting in the collision.
Both Officer Zelaya-Cruz and Robert Morales were transported by paramedics to a medical center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Their current state has not been shared.
The incident continues to be reviewed by the local police department.
We wish a full and rapid recovery for everyone affected by this accident.
When an accident involves a police cruiser or any government-owned vehicle, the legal and insurance processes are often more complicated than a standard two-car accident. In Georgia, there are specific rules and timelines, often called "ante litem" notice requirements, that must be followed if you are filing a claim involving a government entity.
A personal injury attorney familiar with Cobb County and Georgia traffic laws can help victims navigate these strict legal hurdles and ensure that their rights are protected throughout the process.
Insurance companies may try to settle these cases quickly to minimize costs. A lawyer acts as your voice, making sure that any settlement covers not just your current medical bills, but also any future physical therapy or time missed from work.
By having a professional handle the communication with insurance adjusters and legal departments, you avoid the common trap of saying something that could be used against you later in court. Your legal team will make sure your side of the story is heard clearly, whether that involves reviewing dashcam footage or interviewing witnesses who saw the vehicles merge.
This support ensures that your rights are protected from the day of the accident all the way through your recovery.
